Alex swallowed thickly around a large lump that had grown in his throat as Graham had yelled. He struggled to find words as he sat up and put his head in his hands, glad that his hair flopped around his face to hide it.

Alex didn't manage to hide the full body flinch at the yell and the crash of the chair. This is why he hadn't told him. He was scared of the reaction.
